I am an atheist, but I still love learning about religions. My question is, what exactly is Ramadan?
Q. I was raised in a strict Christian family. After the Sept. 11th attacks, yes.. I was sad, and angry, but only at those involved. I recognized that they did NOT represent all Muslims. I even have few very good friends who are Muslim. I'm one of the few liberal people in my family, and I simply love learning about other races, and their beliefs, even though I am an atheist. It's a long story about how I became one, but about the time I was 16 is when I became one. I'm 23 now (around 7 days until I turn 23, anyway). So please, any (accurate) response would be appreciated.. If this helps my plea come to fruition, my cousin, who is a Church of Christ preacher's kid, is a marine and was deployed to Iraq for a tour of duty. He fasted for a whole… [cont.]

A. The fourth pillar of Islam which is fasting is also called Ramadan (in Arabic: rm Dn, Ramadan) or Ramzan in several countries and it is the ninth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar, established in the year 638. It is considered the most venerated, blessed and spiritually-beneficial month of the Islamic year. Prayers, fasting, charity, and self-accountability are especially stressed at this time; religious observances associated with Ramadan are kept throughout the month. God prescribes daily fasting for all able, adult Muslims during the whole month of Ramadan, beginning with the sighting of the new moon. According to the fuqaha Islamic jurists and legislators in 2006 the month of Ramadan (1427 AH) began on September 23 (Middle East,… [cont.]

Are there any good-paying jobs that include speaking a foreign language, learning about foreign countries, etc?
Q. I love learning new languages, learning about foreign countries, and I'm also interested in history. I love to travel and would like a job that includes most of that or something similar. Can anyone give me some examples? Thanks in advance <3

What career would allow me to constantly be learning something new?
Q. I find that I easily get bored with jobs in which I'm asked to do the same thing over and over. I love learning and am looking for a job that allows me to interact with people as well as constantly learn something new. Any suggestions? I've already thought of a Reference Librarian... something along those lines would be great. Thanks!

What is a word that means, "love of learning," "love of education,", or "love of knowledge"?
Q. I have looked everywhere for a term with this definition. I want the word to have a similar ending (e.g. hydrophilic means, "water loving.") In other words, I want "-philic" at the end of the word.
Asked by - Tue Sep 6 00:27:08 2011 - Words & Wordplay - 1 Answers - Comments
A. "Philosophy" means "love of knowledge" if you take each infix literally. The greek word "philogia" means "love of learning", and that's what's used to make words like "philology" (study of language). You could always make your own. "-pheliac", "-phelia" or "philo-" all imply the "love" of something. For "learning" and "knowledge" you could use "soph", "gnost", "logo", or "lern". See what you come up with. I hope I helped!

Q. How early would you start and exactly what would you do.

A. This is long but really worth reading! I'll try to keep this as short as I can... 1. start as young as possible. If your child is still an infant, get yourself into good habits. Be what you want your child to be- because that's what happens, your kids really will grow up to be just like you and your spouse. set a good example! If you want your child to care about what's happening in the world- get into the habit of watching CNN. If there's something interesting in the news, share it with your child. Kids are naturally curious. 2. Many parents go to work for 8-10 hours a day and think that is a good example of work ethic for their kid: it's not. Kid's don't understand how hard you actually work unless they see it and do it themselves. When… [cont.]

Are people, who love learning languages, usually tolerant of other cultures?
Q. Some people love learning languages (e.g. Spanish, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, German ). Besides, they can speak them well. These people are usually culturally tolerant and respect other cultures? True or False? Share your views, thanks
Asked by Person - Sat Oct 4 11:28:39 2008 - Languages - 15 Answers - Comments
A. The fact that they learn languages, means that they at least accept that not everyone in the world will understand english - no matter how loud people are or how much they gesture. That surely is a step ahead of the people who don't think other languages are important!

I'd like to find some way to inspire my kids to the love of learning not just for tests.?
Q. Kids are learning well in school but they learn things for passing the tests not for the love of learning. I hope they develop skills like independent thinking, how to use the knowledge they acquired and enjoy learning not for anybody else. How do help my kids?
Asked by Daylily - Mon Nov 5 21:32:31 2007 - Teaching - 7 Answers - Comments
A. Downplay the importance of tests/quizzes/grades by asking your kids what they learned/are learning each day rather than how they did on a test or what grade they were given. This will help your kids to understand what is really important and they will begin to focus more on what they are learning and less on grades. Let your kids read books/mags that interest them and avoid pushing any particular books/authors on them. Kids will read what interests them out of curiosity, and they will learn as their interests branch out over time. Spend family time exploring issues of interest to you and your kids. Allow them opportunities to discover and develop new interests. When they make mistakes, avoid the temptation to rush in and solve the problem… [cont.]

what is an ideal college major if I love learning about different cultures, countries, peope, etc?
Q. I love learning about the differences and similarities between countries; I love learning about the influences that the past has on the evolution of languages and cultures. What would be an ideal major / area of study for me in college?
Asked by =) - Wed Jun 16 13:27:38 2010 - Other - Society & Culture - 4 Answers - Comments
A. Sociology and/or Anthropology Sociology gives a broader view of humanity, Anthropology studies alot of the cultures. Social Science would give you a great "glimpse" of the human culture. (Be careful of Philosophy, but then again, you may do very well in it. Do a lot of reading and even investigate a speed reading course. It helped me with the studies.) Good Luck!

A. It isn't. We all love learning, but I don't think school, collage and such are learning, I think it's a way of shovelling information in your head, forcibly not willingly. We all would learn if we're allowed to learn in a better way. Cramming information in your head isn't learning, in school half of the people don't remember what they studied two weeks ago, so how do you expect them to remember something from a couple of years before. It's just a matter of opinion, and in my opinion the teaching method that is expressed nowadays is wrong, I call it cramming not teaching. 80% of what you learn are things you learn by choice, you forget whatever you studied in school by the time the next term starts... it's as if ALL that hard work was just… [cont.]

As far as majors go, is it better to major in something you love or a practical major you love learning about?
Q. I'm torn between two majors right now. I'm planning to start college in the fall. I absolutely love writing. I've known thats what I wanted to do with my life ever since I was a preteen. However, people keep telling me that majoring in wriitng isn't a pass to becoming a popular novelist. I get that but I just want to be better at the craft I feel passion for. However, I do love the idea of anthropology. Social sciences tends to be more "practical" than arts but I don't want to waste four years just because people tell me I won't be able to make a living with my writing degree.

A. You could try working it out to do both majors, or minor in one of them and major in the other. Writing could come in handy if you do the anthropology major. I went to college and got 2 majors, which i love, but now that i'm a little older, i'd like to go back if i have the oppurtunity for a fun major like Art, or just take some classes for fun!

A. This is how experts come to be! Walcome! So, first thing is first Learn the parts Then, try uplugging and replugging the main things, such as hard drives and CD drives. Always earth yourself (touch something metalic thats earthed) before touching your components. Theres always a slim chance you might short something. From there onward you gotta reach the final frontier! Or you could read how to build your own pc guides :D

A. It was sure an interesting time to be alive for sure. Some of the things you might find interesting to research are the 1968 Democratic Convention, Haight-Ashbury, the Ohio State students and the national guard, the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the draft lottery. On the last one, I was 18 and drew number 55 so was definitely slated to go to Vietnam when, thank goodness, they eliminated the draft. The music scene was incredible also. Check out the Fillmore East and West. Enjoy your research.
